The purpose of this standard is to focus on the development of skills needed to lead structured Lean improvement projects, with an emphasis on the Define, Measure, and Analyse stages. Learners apply Lean tools in their own workplace to scope problems, gather data, and identify root causes.
The module begins with a workshop on Leading Improvement Projects, covering stakeholder engagement, effective communication, problem definition, and data planning. This prepares learners to take ownership of their projects and lead improvement efforts with confidence.
A series of on-the-job activities guide learners through process mapping, stakeholder analysis, data collection and analysis, and prioritisation techniques. These are supported by online learning on communication, engagement, and aligning improvement with strategic goals.
Learners participate in two structured Project Review sessions (Define and Measure/Analyse), where they present progress and receive feedback. A Lean Coach supports and assesses learners throughout, ensuring the tools are applied effectively and learning is evidenced in real project work.
Additional Information:
- Learners will need to have completed Lean practitioner Module 1 before starting this module.
- It would be beneficial and advised to have a Lean Practitioner Improvement Project assigned to the Learner at the start of this workshop.
- Module 2 is delivered through a blend of facilitated learning, online resources, and applied project work. The emphasis is on active coaching and real-world application, as learners lead their own improvement projects through the Define, Measure, and Analyse stages.
- Learning is supported by a Lean Coach, who provides one-to-one and group facilitation, helping learners plan, apply, and reflect on Lean tools in their own context. Key concepts are introduced through short, guided sessions and reinforced through coaching during activity delivery.
- Learners complete a series of practical, workplace-based tasks, gathering evidence such as process maps, stakeholder analyses, and data plans. Progress is reviewed at two key points, where learners present their work and receive feedback to strengthen their approach.
This module prioritises learning by doing, with coaching and facilitation ensuring that tools are not just understood but meaningfully applied in live project environments.
